Alan made it clear that he expected the team to fully achieve the four objectives by the end of the day. He also promised to review all the work that had been done on the Core Values, Core Focus, and 10-Year Target before moving on to answer the remaining questions on the V/TO. Finally, he again asked the team to check in by providing three pieces of information: bests, an update, and expectations. After a few quiet minutes, Alan asked the “brave one” to begin.
“Had a great weekend up at the cabin with my girls a few weeks back,” Art volunteered. “My professional best is being here. What happened last time was hard, but I want you all to know I’m at peace with it and completely focused on helping Sue and the rest of the team take Swan to the next level.”
Eileen and Sue nodded to affirm that they’d been working productively with Art since the last session. Art shared his update and expectations, and then Alan moved left and asked Carol to check in.
Her response was muted but relatively positive, given the events of the last month. Her professional best was completing five of six Rocks. She mentioned Rocks and the Level 10 Meetings as working, explaining that both tools seemed to help improve accountability. As for expectations, a rare display of self-deprecating humor elicited a healthy laugh from the team.
“I just hope this session goes better than the last one,” she said, smiling faintly.
Alan then invited Evan to check in. Looking customarily frazzled and distracted, Evan dutifully went down his list. He couldn’t think of a personal best. His professional best was “making progress on a lot of my Rocks.”
“Not working?” Evan continued. “Completing Rocks and finding time to get everything done. As for expectations, I just hope we set more attainable Rocks.”
Sue was next. “Professional best was definitely getting the sales Rock done,” she said with a big smile. “Everybody contributed, Vic and I worked really hard together, and it went right down to the wire, but we got our two ‘A’ deals and ten account plans done.”
Sue mentioned Rocks, the Meeting Pulse, and the Accountability Chart as tools that were working and completing all her Rocks and hitting Scorecard numbers as not working. She had two expectations—that the team complete the V/TO and put a solid plan in place to roll out the tools to the rest of the organization.
Vic followed Sue; it was clear the two sales leaders had been working closely together because his check-in almost exactly matched Sue’s. Vic also mentioned the Core Values as working. Eileen followed Vic and agreed, identifying the Core Values Speech and the effort Vic and Sue had put in with the sales team as professional bests. Like Sue, she also expected to complete the V/TO and agree on a rollout plan before leaving that day.
Alan finished recording Eileen’s comments and reviewed the Focus Day tools for a second time. He quickly walked the team through the concept of hitting the ceiling and the five leadership abilities.
